Chris Pugh is a Northern California photographer, writer, and community arts organizer based in Ukiah, California. His work focuses on rural landscapes, overlooked spaces, and small-town life, drawing inspiration from documentary photography and everyday Americana. Pugh is co-founder of the Medium Art Center and works in community journalism throughout Mendocino County.
I photograph places and moments that are often overlooked. Small towns, fading buildings, quiet streets, and the edges of everyday life have always pulled my attention more than spectacle. My work is rooted in observation and patience, influenced by documentary photography, road trips through Northern California, and a fascination with how people leave traces of themselves behind in the landscape.
Photography allows me to slow down and pay attention. I am interested in atmosphere, memory, and the emotional weight ordinary places can carry. Much of my work explores rural life, isolation, resilience, and the subtle beauty found in imperfect or forgotten spaces.
I approach photography less as a search for answers and more as a way of understanding how I move through the world.
